All Different Now

President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, but it wasn't until 1865 that the decree was respected in Texas which is where Angela Johnson chose to set her story about one family's Juneteenth celebration in which they celebrated their freedom.  They were finally able to stop working and go on a picnic and listen to the ocean waves.  They were finally free.
