The 1930s was a long, dusty period in the history of the United States as the Great Dust Bowl swept across the midwest.  There were long periods of drought and a fine layer of dust coated everything. Homes, animals, people, their food...dust was everywhere.  It took many lives in the process, but people were unwilling to give up.  Time after time, they dusted themselves off, and started over.
