Joseph Friedman is used to coming in last at pretty much everything.  Now his teacher is encouraging him to join the cross country team.  Joseph doesn't think he really likes running and thinks it will just be one more thing that he isn't any good at.  Then he meets a new student, Heather, who convinces him to give running a chance.  Maybe learning how to run will help turn his miserable 7th grade experience around.
