Ruth and her family have moved to New York City from Cuba.  Her father works two jobs to support the family while her mother stays at home a lot and misses the old life in Cuba.  Ruth is working hard in school to learn English and is adjusting to life in her new country.  Her father's dream is to make it in America and one of the first steps to his dream life is to own a car.  He shows up one day with an Oldsmobile and takes the family out for a drive.  Unfortunately, that one drive, changes everything.
