For as long as she can remember, Cricket has heard her mother tell stories about a secret bird room. Her mama is sure it exists, she just can't remember where and no one will believe her. Cricket's mom disappears from time to time, but has always come back. But when Cricket's dad dies and her mom doesn't return, she is forced to move in with her Aunt. She misses her parents and wishes that her mom would just come home and get her. When that doesn't happen, Cricket decides to head to the woods on her own in hopes of solving the mystery of the secret bird room once and for all. If she can prove that the room exists, maybe then her mom will come home and stay for good.

But as he moves through the assignment, be starts to realize that maybe Mr. Hupfer does have a point to what he is making his students do.
