The Pumpkin War

by Cathleen Young

Realistic Fiction

Every summer, Bllie and her best friend Sam, grow the biggest pumpkins and then enter them in the annual pumpkin race across the bay.  Until this summer anyway.  Billie is still mad at Sam because not only did he beat her in the race last summer, but he cheated and lied to the judges about it!  Billie is sure that winning is everything and she will do whatever it takes to beat Sam and make sure he knows that they are not best friends anymore.  Just when Billie thinks things are going to work, a family relative shows up whom she has never met before.  Is it possible that there is room in her life for people who have made mistakes in the past and want to do better in the future?
