Caterpillar Summer

 by Gillian McDunn

Genre:  Realistic Fiction

Cat has a lot of responsibilities now that her dad died.  Her mom has to work a lot to support their family which leaves Cat in charge of her younger brother, Chicken.  Chicken has special needs that require extra work and Cat is one of the few people who knows how to help manage his behaviors.  Caring for Chicken means that Cat has to give up a lot of things, like hanging out with friends or having time alone with her mom.  Cat is hanging on until summer when their family will go to Atlanta to visit friends.  But on their way to Atlanta, they get the news that their friends will no longer be able to host them so Cat and Chicken are going to have to spend 3 weeks with grandparents they have never met.  Cat is prepared for the worst, but what she finds on Gingerbread Island might actually be the best thing that ever happened to her.
