Mira thinks that her life will instantly be better when she and her parents are allowed to become citizens and get rations of Amber, a magic drink that keeps people strong and healthy.  It's hard being an outsider and not feeling truly at home, especially when Mira's best friend, Krysta, is perfect.  Mira tries hard to keep up with her, but with Krysta's rations of Amber, she always comes out on top.  And now her teacher has made her be partners with Daniel, the weird kid that no one really likes.  When Mira and her family finally become citizens, Mira is convinced her problems will be over...but will they?
