Ana Dakkar and her brother are students at Harding-Pencroft Academy, a high school that specializes in graduating the best underwater explorers.  Their parents were killed in a scientific expedition so all they have left is their school and each other.  Ana and her freshman class set off to sea to begin their freshman exams when an explosion destroys their school and everyone left behind.  Ana can't believe that her brother and all of the others are gone.  Worse yet, the explosion seems to have been intentional.  Who would want to destroy their school and what can 20 freshman who have barely started their education do about it?  Ana is about to realize that she has a lot to learn if she wants to save herself and the remaining students at Harding-Pencroft.
