The Doughnut King

Nielsen Genre:  Historical Fiction 12 year old Lidia has no idea how here life will change after the day when she watches a Nazi airplane fly over her city of Warsaw.  Poland quickly falls to the German soldiers and as life gets more and more miserable, Lidia knows she has to do something to fight back.  Her brother is already secretly working for the Resistance, even though he refuses to admit it.  Lidia won't take no for an answer so she finds a way to show her brother's friends what she can do.  As the Warsaw uprising begins, Lidia finds herself in the thick of the fighting and no longer cares whether she lives or dies.  She just knows that she has to find the courage to keep on fighting back for as long as she can.

Nielsen Genre:  Historical Fiction WWI is taking over Europe and affecting the lives of millions of people.  This book tells the story of 5 young adults whose lives will never be the same because of this war.  Felix is from Austria-Hungary, Kara is from Britain, Juliette is from France, Elsa is from Germany, and Dimitri is from Russia.  There lives and their stories should never have intersected, but because it did, each of them must display big moments of courage that will in turn, link all of their stories together.

Ferris

 by Kate DiCamillo Genre:  Realistic Fiction It's the summer before Ferris begins 5th grade and it starts out like an ordinary summer, until her grandmother sees a ghost in her room.  Her grandmother believes that the ghost can not leave their house until the beautiful chandelier is lit for the first time.  While her grandmother is dealing with the ghost, other family members are facing their own struggles.  Ferris' uncle has quit it job and moved into the basement to paint, her little sister is running wild all over town, and there house has been invaded by a cranky old racoon.  Ferris isn't sure how all of these problems are going to get resolved, but for some reason she seems to be the one that people are leaning on to help figure out solutions.

The Fort

The Witchlings

Each year there are a few leftovers, called Spares, who aren't placed in formal covens, but Seven has never considered what that would mean for her.  But on the night of the ceremony, Seven watches as her friends and all of the others are selected.  At the end, Seven and 2 others are identified as Spares.  Instead of quietly accepting her destiny, Seven challenges it and is granted an impossible task to complete.  If she and her 2 other Spares can complete it, they'll gain their full magical powers.  If not, well, it's possible they could live out the rest of their lives as toads.

The Liars Society
